Your emotions aren’t lasting as long as you think — your thoughts are just hitting repeat.

Have you ever noticed how one moment of emotion can take over your whole day? A comment, a look, a feeling — and suddenly your heart’s racing, your mind’s spiralling, and you can’t seem to shake it.

Here’s what’s actually happening:

When an emotion fires, your body releases a surge of chemistry designed to keep you safe. Your brain’s amygdala sends a signal, and within seconds, adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine flood your bloodstream.

That surge — the physiological wave of emotion — naturally lasts about 90 seconds. That’s it.

This discovery comes from Harvard neuroanatomist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, who observed that the chemical lifespan of an emotion is about a minute and a half. After that, your body is ready to return to baseline — if you don’t keep re-triggering the wave through thought.

What Keeps the Emotion Alive?

The body tries to complete the wave, but the mind hates uncertainty. So while the body’s trying to release, the mind starts analysing: Why did they say that? What did I do wrong? What if this happens again?

Every time you think about it, you re-fire the same neural network and re-release the same chemistry. You’re not stuck because of the emotion itself — you’re stuck because the story keeps restarting it.

This is how a 90-second biochemical wave turns into a 3-hour mood, a 3-day shutdown, or a 3-year pattern.

What Breaks the Loop?

When the body can’t complete the 90-second wave, it’s usually because the nervous system is already carrying a heavier load. Old stress chemistry may still be active, the baseline of safety may not yet be established, or the energy may belong to something larger — a systemic pattern, subconscious imprint, or ancestral emotion that’s surfacing to be healed.

When you stay coherent through the wave, emotion becomes energy in motion again. And when you meet that wave with compassion — instead of control — even generational patterns begin to soften.

Because safety — real, embodied safety — is what allows everything to heal.
